At the continuation of the Special Session on National Security, more than thirty Members delivered passionate and unreserved assessments of the nation’s security landscape.
Their contributions reflected the gravity of the moment and underscored the House’s unwavering resolve to ensure that Government fulfils its constitutional responsibility to protect the lives and property of every Nigerian across the federation.
Collectively, Members stressed that Nigeria’s security threats have evolved faster than the nation’s institutional response, calling for a fundamental reset of strategy, structure, and accountability.
A central theme was the urgent need to bring security governance closer to the people. Proposals included strengthening local policing as the first line of defence, improving early-warning systems at the grassroots, and creating a dual court structure that allows States to prosecute swiftly to prevent the delays that undermine justice and embolden criminal networks.
Members also highlighted the changing nature of insecurity, noting that groups which once claimed ideological motives now operate primarily as profit-driven criminal enterprises. They raised deep concern about internal sabotage that compromises military operations, calling for stronger counter-intelligence measures and firm legal consequences for collaborators whose actions place communities and security personnel at grave risk.
There was a strong push for enhanced oversight of the security establishment, including calls for military leadership to directly brief the House on operational readiness and strategic alignment with national priorities.
Members also emphasised the need for reforms in recruitment processes to ensure that security institutions are staffed by individuals driven by patriotism, discipline, and a genuine commitment to service rather than by economic necessity alone.
The contributions from the floor reflected a unified call for a renewed national security framework that is proactive, community-rooted, intelligence-led, and backed by transparent funding and swift judicial processes.
The House remains fully committed to advancing these solutions and working collaboratively with the Executive to restore safety, stability, and public confidence across the country.
