{"id":200,"date":"2024-04-02T15:23:44","date_gmt":"2024-04-02T15:23:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hallowmacenews.com\/?p=200"},"modified":"2024-04-02T15:30:25","modified_gmt":"2024-04-02T15:30:25","slug":"reps-summon-kfc-operators-for-discriminating-against-senator-gbenga-daniels-son","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hallowmace.com\/?p=200","title":{"rendered":"Reps Summon KFC Operators For Discriminating Against Senator Gbenga Daniel\u2019s Son"},"content":{"rendered":"<ol>\n<li>The Federal House of Representatives Committee on Disabilities has invited the operators of the fast-food restaurant Kentucky Fried Chicken over the ill-treatment of Mr Adebola Daniel, a person living with a disability.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Adebola is the son of former Ogun State Governor and current senator representing Ogun East District, Gbenga Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>The Chairman of the House Committee, Bashiru Ayinla disclosed this on Tuesday in Abuja while briefing the House of Representatives correspondents at the National Assembly Complex, in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>Ayinla, a member of the All Progressives Congress representing Oshodi\/Isolo-1 Federal Constituency, of Lagos State said that the committee would go the whole distance to ensure that those found to have breached the Disability Act are punished in accordance with the provisions of the law.<\/p>\n<p>Adebola, a wheelchair user was reportedly denied access to a KFC outlet within the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos last week with the manager quoted as saying, \u201cNo wheelchair allowed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawmaker said, \u201cWe have invited KFC and there will be an investigation which will be based on House rules.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cThe discriminatory incident, highlighted by Mr Daniel&#8217;s public account, sheds light on the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr Daniel, a wheelchair user, faced humiliation when he was refused entry to the KFC outlet, with the manager stating, \u2018No wheelchair allowed.\u2019 This treatment is unacceptable and goes against the principles of inclusivity and respect and it is a violation against Disability Act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The son of the ex-governor and serving senator, Gbenga Daniel, recounted his experience at the KFC outlet of the airport in a series of tweets posted last Wednesday via his X handle, @DebolaDaniel, saying, &#8220;Being disabled often rolls over my spirit, leaving behind a trail of shattered dignity and forgotten humanity. Nowhere more so than in Nigeria.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ayinla said the denial of individuals with disabilities access to public spaces is not only disrespectful \u201cbut also undermines ongoing efforts to implement the Disability Act\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He continued, \u201cThe case of Mr Adebola Daniel is one in millions of other unreported cases of such abuses and injustices against people with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will no longer be tolerated by the governments at all levels. Any establishments within the shore of our country irrespective of owners&#8217; status should take note. Enough is enough!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Discrimination against People with Disabilities Prohibition Act 2018, passed by the National Assembly, aims to safeguard the rights of persons with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, compliance with this Act has been lacking since the grace period ended in January.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ayinla pledged the readiness of the committee to engage with communities to kick-start the full implementation of the Disability Act going forward, adding that \u201ckey provisions such as access to public buildings, employment quotas, and welfare promotion for persons with disabilities must be enforced to ensure their rights are upheld\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He called on state governments to domesticate the Disability Act, following the lead of Lagos State.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that a sustained awareness of the public would go a long way in protecting the rights of persons living with one form of disability or the other.<\/p>\n<p>Fielding questions from journalists on the sideline of the briefing, Ayinla rejected the notion that the Committee is speaking up solely because the son of a highly-placed citizen is involved.<\/p>\n<p>He, however, noted that \u2018if it takes Daniel\u2019s son to make our members get access to public places and make the work of our committee known, so be it\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) had ordered the immediate closure of the KFC outlet and given conditions that must satisfied before it would be reopened.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Federal House of Representatives Committee on Disabilities has invited the operators of the fast-food restaurant Kentucky Fried Chicken over the ill-treatment of Mr Adebola Daniel, a person living with a disability.
