As Nigeria marks 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance, it is important to assess the role of one of the most critical pillars of democracy\u2014the Legislature. Since the return to civil rule in 1999, the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly have remained central to lawmaking, representation, and oversight of the executive arm of government.<\/p>\n
While democracy in Nigeria has faced numerous challenges, the legislature has evolved significantly over the past twenty-seven years, recording notable achievements while also grappling with institutional and systemic shortcomings.<\/p>\n
The Legislature and Democratic Consolidation.<\/p>\n
The legislature serves as the voice of the people and the guardian of democratic accountability. Through its constitutional powers, it makes laws, approves budgets, scrutinizes government policies, and represents the interests of citizens.<\/p>\n
Since 1999, Nigeria has witnessed ten National Assemblies, each contributing in varying degrees to the growth and development of democratic governance.<\/p>\n
Major Achievements of the Legislature Since 1999.<\/p>\n
1. Sustaining Constitutional Democracy.
\nOne of the greatest achievements of the National Assembly has been its role in preserving democratic governance. Despite political crises, executive-legislative tensions, impeachment threats, and electoral disputes, the legislature has remained an active institution committed to constitutional order.
\nThe successful transfer of power between administrations and political parties has further demonstrated the maturity of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.<\/p>\n
2. Passage of Landmark Legislation.
\nOver the years, the National Assembly has enacted several laws that have shaped governance, economic development, electoral reforms, transparency, and public accountability.
\nNotable legislative interventions include reforms in the electoral process, petroleum sector regulation, anti-corruption measures, public procurement, fiscal responsibility, and financial transparency.

\nCompared to the early years of the Fourth Republic, the National Assembly has gradually asserted greater independence from the executive arm of government.

7. Constituency Representation and Intervention Projects.
